Leksell Gamma Knife® Lightning A simple solution for accelerated radiosurgery

A simple solution for accelerated radiosurgery

Leksell Gamma Knife® Lightning, the next generation treatment optimizer from Elekta, allows users to quickly and automatically create plans for one or more targets. Optimization based on dose constraints for multiple targets and OAR (organs at risk), together with the possibility to control beam-on-time, enables the reduction of treatment times, while potentially increasing the overall quality of LGK treatments. Lightning represents a significant step forward for the already efficient workflows of the integrated LGK system.

Leksell Gamma Knife Lightning is not commercially available in all countries.

What’s new?

Automated planning

“Leksell Gamma Knife Lightning – a new dose optimization provides excellent dose planning solutions in extremely short planning times. It is practically always capable to fulfill our challenging constraints and requirements and generate exceptional treatment plans. On top of it, the treatment times are usually shorter compare to current approaches. It is the next big step in improving quality and workflow for any gamma knife center”
Josef Novotny, Ph.D. Head of Medical Physics, Na Homolce Hospital, Prague, Czech Republic

Dose optimization at lightning speed

Now you can optimize the dose to targets at a very high speed, with a highly efficient beam-on-time penalization. This results in expertly built plans in less than a minute and significant savings in the duration of treatment.

Constraints-based optimization

Multiple and simultaneous hard constraints such as dose to target and sparing of OAR introduced first time in practical setting. This, in turn, gives the ability to plan for multiple targets and organs-at-risk (OAR) in a single plan, thereby saving a significant amount of planning time.

Multiple plans in less than a minute

Create high quality conformal plans, with additional benefit of potentially better Beam-on-time control. Each of these different plans with different objectives can be created in less than a minute per plan. This makes it easy to compare plans and choose the most appropriate plan for your patient.

Accelerated treatment

“The beam‐on time penalization reduces the beam‐on time by a factor 2–3 compared with the naïve alternative. Dualization and representative subsampling each leads to optimization time‐savings by a factor 5–20. Overall, we find in a comparison with 75 clinical plans that we can always find plans with similar coverage and better selectivity and beam‐on time.”

Potential to deliver plans up to 50% faster

The ability to apply a beam-on-time (BOT) penalty synchronizes the BOT of each sector and also priorities multiple shots in the same isocenter location. This automatic optimization of shot and sector delivery creates a treatment plan with the most efficient delivery parameters and sequence, leading to better time utilization during treatment.

Integrated and seamless workflow

Efficient workflows complement the other treatment planning tools already available in Leksell GammaPlan.

Increased operational efficiency

Workflow improvements with Lightning mean that operational time per patient is optimized at every step of the treatment process, making your SRS program highly efficient.

Assured quality

“You can now get maximal plans in terms of conformality and sparing, but you are taking out that learning curve that needs to be gradually increased amongst new centers, which is just part of the natural history of learning how to plan Gamma Knife cases.”

Quality, consistency and repeatability

Designed for even the novice user to create high quality plans quickly and consistently

Simplifying SRS treatment planning

Easy to use interface and quick optimization means that plans can be changed and reoptimized while the effect on all constraints including Beam-on time is always visible.

Support for clinical decision making

The ability to see the effect on constraints, of changes to the plan, in a few simple steps, provides all the information needed for qualified decision making. This means your patient will benefit from the most appropriate plan for their treatment.
